Survey on the improvement of urban amenities provision and infrastructure of Maroseyka and Pokrovka streets

01.04.2013

Foundation for urban developmen “City Projects of Ilya Varlamov and Maxim Katz” – is an independent non-profit organisation established in summer 2012 for the elaboration and bringing to life the initiatives regarding the improvement of urban amenities provision of today’s Moscow. Among the main issues dealt with by organisation participants are the improvement of pedestrian infrastrusture, illegal parking and visual garbage control, the change of streets, parks and precints exterior look and so on.

In February 2013 City projects have launched a number of research on Maroseyka and Pokrovka streets examination which would be used for making recommendations on the improvement of the streets and their pedestrian infrastrusture. Project volunteers managed to measure pedestrian traffic and gather data on the pavement width, situation with parking lots and public space.

As an addition to this data we launched sociological survey to study the attitude of Maroseyka and Pokrovka pedestrians towards these streets and potential changes they could undergo as well as defining time, reasons and frequency of their visiting the streets.

Besides traditional method of street interviews we decided to make an experiment. First of all we posted links with an invitation to participate in the survey via Foursquare service, a social network with a fucntion of geo-positioning where each registered user can check-in in the place he/she is in, leave or read a hint and post photos of the place. For example, people checked-in in trolley-busN25 on Maroseyka or on Ceaser Kunikov square are advised to follow the link and help to make the city better.

Another one interesting decision brought to life by Foundation coordinators was giving the pedestrians which are too busy or don’t want to stop in the street the leaflets with an appeal to participate in the survey. The leaflet contains the general information and links for the survey – the traditional direct one and QR-code.

The survey is still underway but it’s already worth to mention that the most effective way of data gathering remains traditional (street) intreviews. Low level of reach and amount of complete interviews may indicate low level of Foursquare social network usage and its focus on a narrow audience. Another reason could be in posting links only on public space check-in points (squares, transport, specific buildings) where people don’t tend to check-in so often comparing to in-doors places of entertainment and leisure activities (restaurants, cafes, cinema, stores etc) or places of study/work.
